Bubsy: Fractured Furry Tails is an arcade platform game that made its debut on the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis consoles during the early 90s, with colorful and humorous graphics. The game was later developed for the 32bit Atari machines, the Falcon and the Jaguar.
Review
STORY / GAMEPLAY Bubsy, the game's hero, sets off for a quest to protect the world's children from all those silly stories that talk about fairy-tales and tangled-up myths and save Mother Goose in the process. As with numerous other side scrolling platform games, you must guide the hero (a cat) and run across each level to find the exit. Along the way you will "attend" a twisted tea party, climb a giant bean-stock, dive 20,000 leagues under the sea or even meet Hansel and Gretel themselves. You'll also have to kill "baddies" like the bell-bottom clad giant, pesky vultures, pie throwing machines and "punk" flamingos. In terms of gameplay, Bubsy is nothing groundbreaking or out of the ordinary. It just follows the classic platform formula we saw in hundreds of games. But, the controls are quite "sloppy" in a way that there are many time where the game gets frustrating when you're killed; and you can easily die not because you're careless but because the controls show poor response! So get ready to test your skills and challenge your...nerves! (Note: To be honest, Rayman is by far a much better game in this genre!)
GRAPHICS / SOUND Difficulty aside, the game offers some nice and vividly colored graphics, with fast scrolling and smooth sprites animation though some parallax scrolling is missing on the Jaguar version's backgrounds. Apparently the game is a direct port from the Atari Falcon home-micro version rather than a re-designed Jaguar exclusive. Either way, the game has really nice visuals. The sound is also good with a variety of in-game tunes and some funny and cartoon-ish sound effects.
